Our Approach & Painting Process

The Smith & Company Painting crew followed a proven multi-step process in each room to ensure a long-lasting result:

  1. Tile removal & surface assessment – Removing the existing VCT tile to expose the concrete substrate and evaluate cracks and joints.
  2. Concrete repair – Filling cracks and joints throughout each room to create a stable, even base.
  3. Grinding & prep – Mechanically grinding the concrete to promote proper adhesion.
  4. Base coat application – Applying a polyaspartic primer layer across all three spaces.
  5. Flake broadcast – Hand-broadcasting Smoke-colored decorative flakes for a durable, slip-resistant, visually appealing finish.
  6. Scraping & clean-up – Removing loose flakes to prepare for the topcoat.
  7. Topcoat application – Finishing with a clear, 2:1 ratio, 100% solids polyaspartic topcoat for maximum durability and chemical resistance.

Polyaspartic coatings were chosen over standard epoxy for this project for a few key reasons specific to a working school environment. Polyaspartic systems cure significantly faster than traditional epoxy, which meant less disruption to school operations and a quicker return to normal restroom use.
